The
GOOD LIFE
Research Studio
The Good Life Research Studio focuses on placing the search for a common good life at the core of architectural design. It takes the form of studios, workshops, colloquia, seminars and publications.
ITERATIONS
SUMMER 2026 - I International Colloquium for Architecture Studio Teaching and Learning - CASTL - Colloquium @ ISCTE Lisbon - 2nd and 3rd July - ONGOING OPEN CALL:
First Edition’s Topic: “A Newer Studio – Current Intentions and Formats for Architecture Studios”
The architecture studio remains the foundational pedagogical format in architecture programmes worldwide. It functions simultaneously as a site of design production, critical inquiry, and professional formation. Yet the studio is neither static nor uniform — it continuously evolves in response to global transformations in society, environment, technology, and institutional structures.
We invite professors and tutors who have designed and applied a new studio approach in the last 5 years to participate in the inaugural CASTL Colloquium to reflect on the current intentions shaping architecture studio teaching and the formats through which it is delivered.
Key Questions
Participants are encouraged to address the following themes:
• How are architecture studios being redefined in response to current challenges — including the polycrisis, material scarcity, and digital transformation?
• What pedagogical structures, assessment models, collaborative frameworks, or spatial configurations are being tested or implemented? On which pedagogical theories and practices are these based upon?
• How do studios navigate the tension between disciplinary continuity and experimental reform?
• What role do studio formats play in shaping future architects’ agency, ethics, and adaptability?
Format
The goal of the format is to provide real time for in-depth discussion of the questions being raised in a constructive environment. Due to this, the colloquium will be limited to 8 active participants and the audience will be limited to a maximum of 20 people.
Presentations will be split into 2 sessions of 4 participants each, with a 30 min presentation per participant followed by 90 min discussion period in which all 8 participants are expected to actively take part.
Submission Guidelines
• Submit an abstract in which the studio is clearly described (date, topic, amount of students, institution, pedagogic goals, pedagogic approach, theoretical background in max. 300 words) and a brief bio (max. 100 words)
• Deadline: 10th of April
• Submit to: castl@goodlifers.eu
• Notification of acceptance: 24th of April
